5 DIY wedding Myths – Don’t fool yourself

wedding diy

I thought I’d write a blog post on DIY weddings myths. I love a bit of craftiness, after all I am a jeweller, but there are somethings I just wouldn’t attempt to do for my own wedding. I’m useless at arranging flowers, I can’t enjoy spending time on something that will wilt with 24 hours so I have no desire to learn.   I’ve compiled this list of things that people often believe when it comes to DIY weddings and why it’s all just a myth

Top 5 DIY Wedding Myths

Here’s my list of the top 5 myths, there could be more but I was getting a little too carried away so thought I better stop at 5.

1. It Saves You Cash

wedding diy Sometimes you can save a bit of cash when you do your own wedding cakes, invitations, flowers etc.  But in reality once you’ve bought all your raw materials, had a couple of practise sessions, made a  few mistakes, chances are you’ve spent more money than you intended.

2. It’s Enjoyable

wedding diy Yes, there’s plenty of things I enjoy creating, there’s nothing more satisfying than creating something beautiful and being proud of what I can achieve and if you’ve got a single streak of creativity in you, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

But what if you have to create that item 10 times, 50 times or in the case of wedding invitations, a hundred times?  Would you still enjoy it then? Would you still be able to look at what you’ve created and feel satisfaction, or would you feel relief at the thought of never doing it again?

3. You can make it look as good as the professionals

wedding diy The professionals charge what they do because they have experience, contacts and skill that you don’t.

Sure I could go to my local Tesco’s and pick up some stunning flowers.  I could use the internet to work out how to create a handtied bouquet and on paper I have everything I need to create my own wedding bouquet.  I even go as far as attempting to copy a bouquet I’ve seen on Pinterest.

Would it look as good as the professionals?  Hell no! They know all the little tricks and the finishing touches that would take it looking from homemade to a professional level.

This is a DIY wedding myth that you might be tempted to play myth-busters with, if you’re going to try, please make sure you have a number of practice runs before the big day.

4. Friends and Family love to help

wedding diy I’m sure you know lots of people who would love to give you a hand creating your dream wedding, maybe you’re mums a great baker and she wants to make your wedding cake.  Your aunt loves sewing her own clothes and has offered to make the bridesmaid dresses.  You best friend is more than happy to help you make your wedding invitations over a few bottles of wine.

Sounds great doesn’t it? But the problem is you’re not paying professionals to do this, so dont expect to treat them that way or expect professional level results.

Will they really be happy to help when you’re disappointed with the results and need to get  professional in? No they think you’re being an ungrateful cow, they’ve spent hours on making that cake, flower arrangement (insert your DIY project here) and all you’ve done is complain about it.

5. You’ll love what you create

wedding diy I’ve made plenty of things that I don’t like the end result of.  Mostly cards.  I’m not sure why I struggle making cards, after all it seems that it should be easier working with paper and card than sterling silver and crystals and yet, I struggle to make a card that I can be proud of.

My answer to this is that I no longer make cards, why spend time doing something when you dislike the end result? What if you’ve spent time and money creating something only to hate the end result that much that there’s no way you’ll use them at your wedding?

Have you got any myths that you’d like me to take a look at?

Do you have any other DIY wedding myths to add to my list?  Have you any experience of the above? Have you manage to bust of my DIY wedding myths?  I’d love to hear them.  And of course if you are interested in doing a bit of Wedding DIY then take a look at my .  I’m not against any type of DIY, but make sure you know what you’re undertaking and what level of results you will achieve before seriously considering any projects.

A very quick reminder – I make bespoke bridal jewellery and hair accessories , this is an area unless you have previous experience in, not to attempt to DIY.  One of the main reasons I say this is because it requires specialist tools, has expensive raw materials and it takes a lot of practise to get a professional finish. I strongly suggest taking a jewellery class if you have your heart set on this.  Check your local bead shop for classes and courses.
